Currently, Emily teaches Cello and Piano to children and adults in the Guildford area. Emily’s interest in teaching the very young has lead to her discovery of Cellobabies and training with Kay Tucker on effectively teaching strings to young children.  Emily is also a Music Therapist at Ravenswood Village, Berkshire, working with adults with learning disabilities.

Cellobabies and Emily

Cellobabies makes music making and the Cello undaunting for children - they feel that they can really ‘do it’ and this makes them happy and eager to continue. The activities are easily transferable for doing at home and it is so nice to hear from parents that a child is excited before their lesson!

My thoughts on teaching music

Showing enthusiasm for finding the style and musicality in every piece, or exercise, and keeping the focus on the musical energy, has encouraged my pupils to practice and usually kept them interested!  Music therapy has greatly enriched my understanding of human musicality.  This has undoubtedly been of benefit to my approach to teaching music and reinforced my belief in the importance of music making for all.

Musical experience

Emily chose to learn the Cello following musical encouragement from her primary school choir teacher!  Music remained an active hobby, leading to Emily’s decision to study music at Bath Spa University in 1998.  Whilst at Bath Spa, she specialised in performance and composition and was principal Cello of the University orchestra.

She performed with local orchestras including Bath Philharmonia and the New Bristol Sinfonia.  Emily also performed extensively with other varied ensembles, including Wind bands (Oboe), Viol Consort (Tenor Viol), & String Ensembles (Cello) as part of the ‘Rainbow Over Bath’ concert series, Bath Festival and COMA contemporary music projects.

Emily’s interest in music-making to benefit health and wellbeing lead to a PGdip in Music Therapy at Roehampton University, during which time Emily also enjoyed performing freelance with semi-professional orchestras in London.  She also performed frequently with pop/rock artists at well known music venues in London, such as Barfly and the Marquee club, as well as other city based music festivals, such as ‘In the City’ in Manchester, and at the Birmingham NEC ‘Sound’ event.

She continues to enjoy playing with three very stylistically different chamber ensembles; The Marinescu Ensemble (String Quartet/Trio), the Delphi Trio, (Flute, Cello, Piano) and the Minerva Duo (Flute/Cello).

Comments & recommendations

You know I feel that I can’t speak too highly of Cellobabies, it has given Thalia not just a good understanding of the basic principles but also a real enjoyment of music which spills over into her play all the time. She writes songs and trys to teach her baby brother and sister about George, Charlie, Dan and Alice and picks out notes when she is listening to music! Having learnt music in a very different environment myself, I really notice the difference in terms of her confidence and enthusiam for music. I would whole heartedly recommend this to anyone with small children.

I’m so grateful to you for the lovely introduction you have given Thalia to cello and Music in general and we will try very hard to keep up the good work.
