My thoughts on teaching music

I am passionate about the violin, and in teaching others to play well, whatever their age. I strongly believes that establishing a sound technique is fundamental to maximum achievement and enjoyment on the instument.

Musical experience

Jackie Oates began playing the violin at the age of 7. During her time in Staffordshire, she led the Stafford Youth Symphony Orchestra and became deputy leader of both the Staffordshire County Youth Orchestra and String Ensemble. She also played in a String Quartet and for local amateur dramatics productions.

In 2001, Jackie moved to Devon to study at Exeter University. Whilst she remained a keen classical performer, it was during this time that she started performing as a folk violinist and singer.

In 2003, she was a finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award, from which she went on to perform both nationally and internationally, at festivals and arts centres.

In the Summer of 2004, she represented England at the ‘Eurofolk Festival’ in Spain. She features on many folk albums, notably ‘Witness’ by Show of Hands.

Her own debut debut album, ‘Jackie Oates’ was released in early 2007 and her next album, ‘The Violet Hour’, was released in 2008.

Jackie regularly leads workshops in traditional fiddle and singing across the country. Currently, she is a nominee for the ‘Horizon Award’ at the BBC Folk Awards 2008.
