My thoughts on teaching music
Rebecca teaches all styles of music and takes a keen interest in the future development of her pupils.
As well as incorporating aspects of the Kodaly approach within her lower strings teaching, Rebecca is also a qualified colourstrings tutor. She enjoys the interaction between teacher and pupil and is keen to share with others the enjoyment that she gains from playing the cello.
Rebecca teaches all ages and abilities from beginner to diploma/degree level and is continuously exploring new and exciting approaches to her teaching. With an equal emphasis on instrumental technique and musical/artistic growth, Rebecca is motivating and keen to promote a positive attitude towards home practice.
Musical experience
Rebecca grew up in The Lake District and this is where she developed her passion for music. She attended The University of Huddersfield, obtaining a BA Honours Degree in Music and Spanish under Susan Lowe and Anna Shuttleworth. Rebecca then went on to study for a Masters Degree in Performance Practice at The University of York and subsequently moved to Scotland in 2003 to attend the RSAMD in Glasgow. Rebecca received cello lessons from Robert Irvine, gaining a Postgraduate Diploma in Solo Performance and was asked to represent the Academy in a series of masterclasses with Raphael Wallsfisch.
Other cellists with whom Rebecca has received masterclasses include Alexander Baillie, Louise Hopkins, Melissa Phelps and Lowri Blake.
Rebecca now enjoys a freelance performing career as well as teaching for various education authorities including Angus Council, Glasgow City Council and Falkirk Council. She is a qualified Colourstrings Cello Tutor and has worked for East Renfrewshire Council leading colourstring cello lessons, singing games classes and co-conducting the Colourstrings Orchestra. Rebecca also works for NYCOS and The Youth Music Initiative.
Rebecca is a member of The Nevis String Quartet, with whom she has performed all over Scotland including concerts in Edinburgh, Falkirk, Dundee and The Isle of Arran. In the summer of 2007, the Quartet undertook a mini tour of The Lake District.
Rebecca works regularly with performing/recording artists around the UK and supported The Bare Naked Ladies in May 2007 at The Barrowlands and The Carling Academy in Glasgow with Michael Hargan. She recently recorded on the album ‘Hot Love’ (a tribute album to Marc Bolan) with Alec ‘Midge’ Peebles and has just recorded the soundtrack to ‘Dark Nature’, a horror film directed by Marc de Launay , due to be released for the BBC in the coming year.
Rebecca is on the committee of the Glasgow ESTA Branch and attends numerous courses run by themselves as well as the ABRSM including the ‘Teaching Music Effectively’ Course.
Rebecca is currently studying for a certificate in child behaviour through the UK Open College.
