Violin & Violababies and Ruth
Ruth believes Stringbabies is a pupil centred approach to learning and playing. Children have fun developing general musicianship and instrumental skills in a way that they can understand. This is achieved through the use of composition, songs and musical games.
My thoughts on teaching music
Ruth enjoys teaching the violin and viola as she believes that music enriches everyone and all pupils can gain
self confidence through playing and performing. Ruth aims to achieve a sound technique through lessons which are based on the individual pupil’s learning style and musical ideas. Foremost lessons should be fun for the pupil and the teacher!
Musical experience
Ruth started playing the violin at the age of eight through the Sheila Nelson string project in East London. After progressing through the ranks of the London Schools’ Orchestras, Ruth continued her studies with Mark Knight at the Junior Department of the Guildhall School of Music. It was here that Ruth developed an enthusiasm for viola playing! Ruth then studied at Trinity College of Music with John Crawford and, as a postgraduate, at the Royal Academy of Music with Jan Schlapp. It was whilst a student that Ruth received tuition in the Kodaly Method and Dalcroze Eurythmics which she now endeavours to use in her teaching as much as possible to enhance pupils pitch and rhythm skills.
Ruth now combines freelance performing with instrumental teaching. She is currently teaching violin and viola for Sandwell Youth Music & Arts Service and at Winterfold House Prep School as well as privately. It is through her LEA work that Ruth has seen the benefits of inclusive music tuition which, in particular, have given young people from disadvantaged backgrounds confidence through creative achievement. Ruth also believes that viola playing should be promoted as it is a wonderful instrument that is too often neglected in favour of the violin.
In terms of performing, Ruth has an eclectic mix of work from performing pop music in theatre shows to playing in Baroque costume. She has performed with orchestras including the National Symphony Orchestra, English Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Da Camera and Opera East, performed with period instrument groups including the English Haydn Festival Orchestra and The Eighteenth Century Concert Orchestra as well as recording for film and television and playing on cruise ships! Ruth is currently on tour with the theatre shows “Jive Talkin”, “Voulez Vous” and “The Winner Takes All”.
